Silicon carbide, with a chemical formula of SiC, is a compound comprised of quartz sand, petroleum coke, wood chips and other raw materials. This combination is then smelted in a resistance furnace at high temperatures. It is also commonly referred to as electrolon sand or refractory sand.

 

There are two types of silicon carbide: black and green. Both are hexagonal crystals with a specific gravity of 3.20~3.25g/cm3. The Mohs hardness of silicon carbide is 9.5, making it an extremely hard material.

 

The powder form of silicon carbide is obtained through various chemical processes. Green silicon carbide contains more than 99% SiC and is known for its excellent self-sharpening properties. It is mainly used for processing hard alloys, titanium alloys, and optical glass.
