Silicon carbide, with the chemical formula SiC, is a compound made up of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), wood chips (with added salt for producing green silicon carbide), and other raw materials. It is then heated at high temperatures in a resistance furnace, a process known as smelting. Silicon carbide is also commonly referred to as electrolon sand or refractory sand.
This compound is categorized into two types: black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide. Both varieties have a hexagonal crystal structure and a specific gravity of 3.20~3.25g/cm3. Additionally, silicon carbide has an impressive Mohs hardness of 9.5. The production of silicon carbide powder involves various chemical processes.
