Brown Fused Alumina (BFA) has many exceptional characteristics such as high purity, good crystallization, strong fluidity, and corrosion resistance. Additionally, it is also known for being an economical material as it is much more cost-effective than traditional brown corundum while having the advantage of no explosion, no chalking, and no cracking in the application process. This makes BFA an ideal aggregate and filler for manufacturing shaped refractories and fused alumina refractories. It is obtained through fusion of bauxite in a tilting electric arc furnace at high temperatures, resulting in a brownish coloured abrasive with high hardness and extreme toughness. Additionally, BFA also demonstrates heat resistance, erosion resistance, machinable strength, and thermal stability.
Furthermore, Brown Aluminum Oxide is specially manufactured for general abrasive applications such as bonded abrasive tools, polishing, and sandblasting processes. It has lower abrasive capacity than diamond, boron carbide and silicon carbide, but is widely used for grinding materials and polishing tough and hard surfaces. It is also a high-grade refractory material and can be found in macro and micro powder form in F and P grades.


Brown corundum was used as sandblasting surface treatment, because of its relatively high density, so that is less dust in the process of sandblasting. This ensures operator health and safety, at the same time it can improve operator visibility.


The unique particle size of brown corundum ensures that more effective particles can hit the surface of the object, so the use of brown corundum can greatly reduce the loss of abrasive. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is a solid/crystalline substance that is brown in color. It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale and its melting point is 2045°C (3723°F). The boiling point of aluminum oxide is approximately 2980°C (5400°F) and its density is 3.9 g/cm³. The refractive index is 1.76 and its specific heat capacity is 0.88 J/gK. Aluminum oxide has a thermal conductivity of 30.0-35.0 W/mK at room temperature and its bulk density is 1.57-1.65 g/cm³. The grain shape of aluminum oxide is regular and sharp-edged and it is non-magnetic. On the Mohs hardness scale of abrasives, aluminum oxide is rated 9 and the crystal structure is trigonal hexagonal. The particle size of aluminum oxide is 12-1200 micro-meters (μm). Its chemical composition is Al2O3 (95%+), SiO2 (<1.5%), MgO (<1.4%), and it usually contains below 0.11% free iron content. Its refractoriness is above 1900°C, pH is neutral (7.0), and it is soluble in hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid. Aluminum oxide is highly flame resistant, an insulator (non-conductive) as far as electrical conductivity is concerned.


Additionally, it has a water-soluble salts content of less than 0.3% and its cleaning characteristics are non-polluting. Its coefficient of thermal expansion is 8x10-6/°C, it has high mechanical strength and chemical stability, and it exhibits a high thermalshock resistance.
